Hemp

Hemp is a bast fiber plant similar to flax or ramie. Hemp is an environmentally friendly fiber because (1) it grows very quickly and (2) it doesn’t attract a lot of pests, so it doesn’t normally require pesticides. Hemp is renowned for its strength and durability. Although undyed hemp roving is most often seen in a creamy white or light brown color, depending on how it is processed, it can also be gray, black or green.

Hemp fiber has a long staple length, normally about 8 inches. It blends well with other fibers such as wool or cotton. If you are blending it yourself, you may want to cut it first to a similar length as the fiber your going to blend it with to make it easier to blend and work with.
