Llama
Llamas are probably the most common variety of the various South American camelids found in the United States. The coat of most llamas consist of short guard hairs that can be used for rugs or ropes and a soft undercoat that can be used for spinning or felting. On some llamas, no guard hair is present.
The fiber from a sheared llama will typically have a staple length of about 3 to 4 inches. Once the guard hairs are removed (as they will be if you buy a prepared llama roving), you’ll find that the fiber is soft – although not as soft as alpaca, vicuna or some other luxury fibers – lightweight, and warm. Llama fiber comes in a variety of beautiful natural colors, but it also blends well with other fibers and takes dye well.
