Vicuna
The vicuna is a wild South American camelid, related to the alpaca and the guanaco. Vicuna fiber is extremely warm and extremely fine. However, it is expensive and not widely available because the vicuna is considered to be a threatened species.
If you are in the market for some vicuna wool, please make sure that it imported legally from Peru. The Peruvian government has a labeling system to identify vicuna wool that has been obtained legally, which guarantees that the vicuna was captured, sheared alive, then returned to the wild.

Mountain Shadow Ranch’s eBay store is another great place to start if you’re looking for vicuna fiber. They often have it in stock, and they guarantee it has been legally imported and include the paperwork to prove it.
Spinning vicuna fiber is similar to spinning alpaca fiber. However, more care and a slightly slower spinning speed may be required because vicuna wool generally has a shorter staple length than alpaca wool.
