If you’ve made it to this page, it’s a fair bet that you are interested in one or more of these crafts: spinning, weaving, needle felting, knitting, or crochet. If you want to learn more about your favorite craft, or just get some inspiration, check out the links under ‘Books’ to the left.
Or, if you are interested in learning more about all types of sheep’s wool, here’s the book I’d recommend:
In Sheep’s Clothing: A Handspinner’s Guide to Wool by Jane Fournier has information about most of the sheep breeds you’ve heard of, and probably a few you haven’t. This book has sections covering fine wool sheep breeds such as Merino and Corriedale, longwool and crossbred wool breeds such as Bluefaced Leicester and Coopworth, and down wool breeds such as Shetland and Suffolk. In each section, you’ll find specific information about how to wash and prepare that type of wool, and what you should expect in a fleece for each breed - the fleece weight, the fiber diameter, the staple length, and what it is best used for, along with a photo of the fiber.
There’s also some good information toward the back of the book about selecting and storing a fleece, blending wool with combs and carders, and some basic information about spinning. So, if you are interested in learning more about wool, you should think about adding In Sheep’s Clothing: A Handspinner’s Guide to Wool to your library.
