Jacob

A Jacob sheep fleece is white with black or dark brown spots. According to the standard for the breed, about 60% of the fleece should be white and the rest should be spotted. The white portion of the fleece is generally is finer than the darker colored spots.

Jacob wool has a relatively long staple length, averaging from about 3-5 inches, but can be found in lengths up to about 7 inches, which makes it easier to use for a beginning spinner. When a Jacob fleece is blended, the color can vary from white to black, but will generally be in the light to dark gray range.

Jacob wool is considered to be a medium grade, suitable for outerwear and blankets. It has good crimp, which makes it excellent for knitting or weaving. Jacob fleeces are lustrous with very little lanolin, so if you buy Jacob’s wool in its raw form, it won’t lose too much weight after cleaning.
