Romney

Romney sheep are considered to be a longwool breed. The staple length of their fiber is typically about 5 inches long. Romney fiber is lustrous with good crimp, and the fleece hangs in separate locks.

The wool from a Romney sheep can be white, black, gray, silver or varying shades of brown. Romney wool also takes dye well. Any current auctions for raw Romney wool or prepared Romney top or roving are displayed below – click a picture or description to get more information or to place a bid.

You can also sometimes find Romney fiber at Paradise Fibers, most often in undyed form.

If you buy a raw Romney fleece, you may find it easier to prepare for spinning than the raw wool from other sheep breeds due to its relatively low lanolin content. Because Romney fleeces have less lanolin than the fleece of other sheep breeds, you’ll get more clean wool per pound.

Of all the long wool breeds, Romney wool is among the softest. Although it is fine enough to use in some garments, it is coarser than Merino or other fine wool fleeces so it is easier to spin for beginners. Romney fiber also felts easily, so you can use it for both needle felting and wet felting.
